Thomas Henry Tibbles was a journalist for the Omaha Daily Herald. He garnered attention to the Standing Bear vs. Crook trial through his published articles. Following the trial, he traveled with Susette La Flesche and Chief Standing Bear on a lecture tour to spread awareness about the mistreatment of native tribes. Thomas used his journalism career to help put the trial and other mistreatments, like the Battle of Wounded Knee and slavery during the Civil War, into the forefront of American journalism.
“The President sent Standing Bear to the Indian Territory and he ran away. The President had him arrested and made a prisoner. You took Standing Bear away from the President and made him free. You are a greater man than the President, and therefore we address you by the most honorable name that we have.” - Ponca member regarding T. Tibbles
